What is Brokk and robotic demolition, and how does it work?

Robotic demolition means using a compact machine operated by remote control rather than from a cab. Brokk is the best known make, and the name is used across the trade for this whole class of machine.

The machine is a small tracked unit carrying a breaker, crusher, shear or bucket on an articulated arm. The operator works it from a distance using a control unit, watching the tool directly while standing clear of the dust, noise and falling material.

That combination, machine power in a compact body driven from a safe distance, is what makes it useful. It puts serious force into places a person with a hand tool cannot safely reach and a full-size excavator cannot fit.

When do you need a Brokk demolition machine?

You need one when the work is heavy but the space is tight, or when it is unsafe or impractical for someone to break out by hand. Both come up constantly in refurbishment.

Typical work includes internal strip out, breaking out ground floor slabs and bases, demolishing plant plinths and machine bases in plant rooms, and removing concrete in basements and lift pits. Anywhere access is through a door rather than an opening in the wall is a candidate.

It is the method of choice inside occupied and partly occupied buildings, where an electric machine avoids exhaust fumes and the operator is kept away from the worst of the dust and vibration.

What can a Brokk machine do, and where does it fit?

Fitted with a breaker these machines break out reinforced slabs, bases and mass concrete. Fitted with a shear or crusher they cut steel and process concrete into liftable sizes. Fitted with a bucket they clear the arisings they have just created.

Their compact width lets them pass through standard doorways and be hoisted to upper floors and lowered into basements, so machine-level force reaches places that would otherwise mean hand breaking. That is a genuine step change in the pace of confined-space demolition.

They rarely work alone. On most jobs the machine breaks down sections that have first been freed by diamond cutting, as part of our wider controlled demolition using bursting, crunching and cut and lift. The cutting defines what comes out; the machine does the heavy breaking and clearing.

Keeping Brokk demolition clean and safe

Breaking concrete releases respirable crystalline silica, so we suppress the dust with water at the tool and keep the enclosed space ventilated. An electrically powered machine adds no exhaust fumes indoors, which is a real benefit in a basement or plant room.

Remote operation is itself a safety control. The operator stands clear of the breaking, out of the immediate line of falling material and away from the worst of the noise and vibration, which is exactly why these machines suit hazardous and confined work.

As with all our demolition, the structure is kept stable throughout, the removal sequence is planned in advance, and temporary works remain the responsibility of the client's engineer and must be in place before we break anything load bearing.

Our robotic demolition process, step by step

First we survey and plan. We assess the access route into the space, the structure to be removed, the floor loadings for the machine, and how the arisings will be cleared out.

Next we get the machine in. It is tracked, hoisted or lowered into position as the access demands, the power and any dust suppression are set up, and the right tool is fitted for the work.

Then we demolish in sequence. The machine breaks, shears and clears in the planned order, with dust controlled and the remaining structure kept stable throughout.

Finally the arisings are cleared, the space is cleaned down, and the area is handed back at the stage the works require.
